The Prelude to the Dissolution of the Western Roman Empire

Pittsburg, May 29, 2019 (Issuewire.com) – Due to Ranger’s interest in Roman history, particularly in Rome’s infamous and by no means predictable downfall, he shares his opinions on the matter: “The fictional memoir of this novel is dedicated to the proposition that it was the chronic political instability of the Western Roman Empire that led to its dissolution during the fifth century,” Ranger states. “The Romans just couldn’t stop seeing themselves as their own worst enemies and as a result the fifth century determined for better or worse that western civilization would go forward not as one nation but as many.”

Set in the crux of Rome’s three civil wars (AD383-410), exacerbated by the potential threats of barbarian invasions and the xenophobic machinations of elements in Rome’s government against barbarian elements that were willing to ally themselves with Rome, protagonist Marcus Cedranus catches himself at the most perplexing crossroads in Roman history. The dreaded invasion of the barbarians across the Rhine on December 31, 406, triggered revolts in Britain and eventually in Italy that ultimately rendered Rome incapable of defeating its enemies. The Western Empire had 66 more years of existence after the “Sack of Rome” in 410 by Alaric and his Visigoths but its fate had been sealed by the events of 383 to 410.

Often disregarded by common ‘Fall of Rome’ movies, this book turns the spotlight on part of the truth which led to that tragedy.

John Ranger, retired computer programmer and database administrator who spent 32 years at IBM, has a B. Sc. Degree from the University of Manitoba, Canada and a lifelong interest in Roman history. He has one son and lives in Wappingers Falls, New York.

Ranger’s A Chronicle of the Roman Twilight will be exhibited at the BookExpo + BookCon 2019, to be held at the Jacob Javits Center, New York City, this coming May 29 to 31 and June 1 and 2, 2019, at the Authors Press Booth # 1667.
