Harry Coumnas was born and raised in New York. Harry was even the subject of a 2003 documentary.

Harry reserved for himself a position in the comic book industry’s Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 2001. Harry Coumnas’s grandfather started encouraging him in art when he was just three years old. He started doing comic books when he was 18. About Harry Coumnas

Harry Coumnas was born and raised in New York, New York. At the age of 8, at the insistence of his school teachers, Coumnas’ parents enrolled him in the Brooklyn Academy of Fine Arts. Harry went on to attend the academy for eight years under the tutelage of Michele Falanga, an award-winning Italian fine artist.

At 18, Harry started drawing for comic books that varied in themes: westerns, fantasy, mysteries, histories and other contemporary themes. Initially, most of his work was in funny animal comics, which he signed as “Ritz”. He was approached but turned down job offers from comic giants such as Walt Disney. In the early 1950s, he worked for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Avon and several other comic book companies.
