Mar Makil Basketball Tournament Brings Large Crowd to Brandon

Brandon, Florida Apr 2, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - The 11th Mar Makil Basketball Tournament held at Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Church in Tampa turned into an exciting event. The matches, which began at 9 AM on Saturday, concluded at 10 PM the same night. A total of 15 teams from various Christian churches across Florida competed in the middle school, high school, and college categories.
In the highly competitive middle school division, the Tampas Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Church emerged as first place winners, with Hollywoods Zion Assembly of God Church finishing with second place. In the high school division, Tampas Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Church's A team claimed the first position, while Tampas Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Church B team secured the second position. In the college division, Coral Springs Our Lady of Health Syro-Malabar Church won first place, and Seffner St. Joseph Syro-Malabar Church took second place.
Father Jose Adoppillil, the Vicar of Tampa Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Church, and Father Joby Poochukandathil, the Assistant Vicar, presented the winners with trophies and cash awards. Various committees led by Justin Mattathilparambil, Jeffrey Cheruthaniel, Dustin Thomas Mudeekunnel, Abin Thadathil, Shawn Makil, Simon Poozhikunnel, Joselin Puthusseril, Jerrin Pazhempallil, Sabin Poovanthingal, Alby Thekkekuttu, Joyson Pazhempallil, Rajeev Kootumkal, Baby Makil, Josemon Thathamkulam, Renimon Pachilamakkil, Kishore Vattaparambil, and Jimmy Kalappurayil organized the event. The men's ministry and women's ministry of the parish had arranged a variety of food stalls.
The tournament has been organized for the past eleven years in memory of the first bishop of the Kottayam Knanaya Catholic Archdiocese in India, Bishop Mar Mathew Makil, who was later elevated to the dignity of a Servant of God in the Catholic Church.
